OUR STORY

Rooted in Response, Growing with Intention

Our Journey

Hawaiʻi Behavioral Health Connection (HiBHC) was born from the urgency of unmet need. Formerly known as Maui Strong Mental Health Response (MSMHR), our organization formed immediately following the devastating Lāhainā, Kula, and Olinda wildfires on August 8, 2023.

A collective of credentialed health and behavioral health professionals, we relied on the volunteer work of our colleagues and students to offer pro bono clinical, administrative, and training-related services.

What started as a temporary initiative quickly became a long-term commitment. With the support of a SAMHSA Emergency Response Grant, we expanded in April 2024 to become Hawaiʻi Behavioral Health Connection.

Today, we are a nonprofit organization serving all islands, dedicated to ensuring permanent coordination of much-needed clinical services and training opportunities throughout Hawaiʻi.

OUR MISSION

To increase access to clinically and culturally appropriate care for all people of Hawaiʻi.

Our Values

Rooted in equity, ethics, and empirical evidence, we support systems of collaboration to connect, align, and create communities advancing professional development through our values of education, service, advocacy, program development, data, and collaboration.

Across all of our services and organization, our values are rooted in equity, ethics, and empirical evidence, which helps guide our compass.

Education

Clinical and cultural education are essential to training and maintaining competent care. With years of experience as clinical supervisors and graduate program professors, our mission is to create opportunities for clinicians of all levels to advance cultural and evidence-based education.

Service

Our service to our communities and colleagues is a small way of paying forward the mentorship and collaboration provided by our mentors and colleagues, and we look forward to the ripple effect continuing for future professional and personal development opportunities.

Advocacy

We are dedicated to serving all people of Hawaiʻi, though we prioritize advocacy and service for those who are underserved and/or experience marginalization. Our programs are targeted toward programs and organizations working with underinsured and uninsured people.

Program Development

We strongly believe in collaborations that empower community organizations and providers to develop or adapt their own programs and utilize our knowledge and experience to facilitate connection and sustainability.

Data-Informed

As responsible scientist-practitioners, we are mindful of the importance of prioritizing collecting and analyzing data to inform our future activities. We utilize data to better understand gaps in care, identify unmet needs, evaluate program effectiveness, adapt protocols to maximize benefits, and help inform the scientific and clinical communities.

Collaboration

Everything and everyone is interconnected, and we believe in the Indigenous value of all things in the natural world being our relatives. We strive to connect with other organizations and clinicians at all levels because we believe that through working together, we can make greater improvements.

The right time for care is now.

Whether you’re looking for support or ready to lend yours, your journey can begin today. We’re ready when you are.
